More About the Family of Marion McMillan Barrett

The Barretts’ originated in Ireland. John Barrett married Margaret Nelson. They went on to have the following children:

  • Anthony (b 1802 in Ireland)
  • John (b c 1811 County Mayo, Ireland),
  • Patrick (b 1814 Derryhillagh, Crossmolina, County Mayo, Ireland),
  • Michael (b 1816 Derryhillagh, Crossmolina, County Mayo, Ireland),
  • James (b c 1826 in Ireland)
  • Catherine (b 1831 in Ireland)

The Patrick above who was born in 1814 at Derryhillagh, Crossmolina, County Mayo, Ireland married  Bridget Haggerty ; they moved from Ireland to Scotland sometime between 1842 and 1851. We first see them at the 1851 Census

The above is just the extracted Barrett names. The household was obviously a lodging house and had very many occupants not related to the family we are interested in. Goosedubs was a small lane running between Bridgegate and Stockwell Street, on the north side of the River Clyde. We find Patrick Barrett as a 40-year-old labourer living with his wife, Bridget, aged 30, and their children, Ann (13) and Michael (8). All are said to have been born in Ireland. By the time of the next census, the family are still living at 12 Goosedubs but the family has grown a bit.

Here we find the Barret’s still living at 12 Goosedubs.  Patrick is aged 47 and his wife, Bridget, is aged 40. Their daughter, Ann, who we saw at the 1841 Census is no longer in the household; she married John Judge at St Andrew’s Chapel on 2 October 1855 and had her own household at this point.. Michael, the next child, is 18 and, like his parents, he was born in Ireland. New children since the 1851 Census are Mary (9), Richard (7) and Bridget (5) and all of them were born in Glasgow and all are scholars. I assume the parents were married in Ireland and since there is a big age gap between Michael and Mary, I think it is reasonable to conclude that there may be other children, perhaps still in Ireland.

Patrick seems to have aged 13 years between censuses, not ten. Bridget is recorded with her maiden name rather than her husband’s name. He is now said to be 60 and she is 50. They have moved to 19 Margaret’s Place which isn’t too far from where they were at the 1861 Census and is still on the north side of the river. The children have grown up and Michael is now 28 and a labourer, still unmarried; Mary and Bridget both work as “reelers”; Mary is 18, Bridget is 14. Richard is aged 16 and is a “callenderer”

There are quite a few changes in the family at this census. The family now live at 201 Rutherglen Road, Glasgow. Patrick is mysteriously 80-years-old now (sic) and is a “roadsman”. His wife, Bridget is 61. Their eldest son, Michael, is still unmarried aged 33 (sic) and is a labourer in a boatyard. Their daughter, Mary, is said to be a 36-year-old charwoman and a widow. As we will see, she had married James McKinney in 1874 and they had three children, two of which, Bridget (6) and Mary (8) are also in the household described as granddaughters. Their surname (and their mother’s) is recorded as McKenna not McKinney. The next child is Richard who is now a 25-year-old, unmarried, clothlapper. The remaining two people are Patrick and Bridget’s other daughter, Bridget, and her husband, Edward Conroy; here they are recorded as Kinroy. Bridget is a 26-year-old cotton millworker and her husband, also 26-year-old, is a Hammerman. This rounds off the household. Obviously quite a lot has happened to the family between the 1871 and 1881 Censuses

Michael Conroy Grandson S M 7 Glasgow, Lanarkshire
Richard Barrett Son S M 34 Calendar man Glasgow, Lanarkshire

At this census the family are living at “Back Stair, 64 Rose Street, Hutchesontown, Glasgow”. Patrick is an eighty-year-old “corporation labourer; Bridget is mysteriously only a few years older than at the 1881 Census. Their son Michael is a “holder at ship yard” so he has been in the shipyard for a number of years; he is now said to be 40-years-old. Richard, the next son, is still in textiles and he is a 34-year-old “calendar man”. The other people in the house are grand-children. Catherine and Michael Conroy are 8 and 7 respectively and Catherine is a scholar. Both of these are the children of Patrick and Bridget’s daughter, Bridget, who had married Edward Conroy in 1880. They were newly married and living with Bridget’s parents at the taking of the 1881 Census but I have not found any trace of either Bridget or Edward since that census.

The last person in the household is Bridget McKenney, granddaughter, aged 16, and a “tobacco worker”. She is the daughter of Patrick and Bridget’s other daughter, Mary. Mary had married James McKinney in 1973. Of their two surviving children at the 1891 Census, one is found with her parents and she is recorded as McKenney but the other surviving child, Mary, is found with her mother and her second husband, Francis Hanratty, and they live at 4 Academy Square, Mossend, Bellshill, Lanarkshire where she is recorded as Mary Hanratty. As we will see later, there is a bit of a mystery about what happened to James McKinney and why one of their children appears to be living with her grandparents and the other with Mary’s second husband.

I now go on to list some of the event sin the lives of their children, one, of course, who was to marry Charles Neil.

The Children of Patrick Barret and Bridget Haggerty

I deal with the basics of the children of Patrick Barrett and Bridget Haggerty in order here, but these children had children of their own and in the course of my researching this branch of the family, I came across variable amounts of information on these people – i.e. the grandchildren of Patrick Barrett and Bridget Haggerty. In the following stories, we will see some of them appear in census returns and, of course, their births are recorded as part of the story of their parents. However, It would make this page even longer than it is already is if I included all these details here, so I have added a sub-sub-page to the site where you can find out more about them if this interests you, You can find this page here.

Anne Barrett – Some Facts About Her Children

Normally I would think to follow the family through the census returns and then return to the children individually. This is not appropriate in the case of Ann and her husband John Judge. The family, as it appears in the census returns, looks like a medium sized family but gaps in the dates of birth suggest something else. At the 1911 Census, Ann says that she has had twelve children and only four of them are still alive. Just going by the Census returns you would miss a lot of these children but a search of the statutory indexes reveals a lot more, including a consecutive run of five children born between 1863 and 1872, none of whom lived beyond three years of age. The following table illustrates the births. Those that are in bold type died aged three or under.

It is obvious that just looking at the census returns gives a totally false impression of the experience of the family over the years. Returning to the censuses, however, we next find the family living at Laws Back Land

As we saw from the list above, the couple had already had one child named Michael who was registered born in 1856 but registered dead in 1958 aged 1. This Michael is listed as born in Ireland but this is not the case; he was registered as born at 12 Goosedubs on 20 Oct 1859.

The family have moved from Laws Back Land, Clyde, Glasgow since the 1861 Census; they now live at 20 Margaret Place, Glasgow. A feature of the Judge family census returns is the fluidity of all the ages of people. Ten years after the previous census  John is said to be 43 ( a 13 year increase); Ann is more realistic at 33. But there is clearly some mistake with Helen or Ellen’s age; she can’t be 1. In fact she was born in 1861 so would be about 10 years-old. That’s how it is possible for her to marry in 1880 aged 19. Michael is correctly said to be born in Glasgow unlike the previous census where a ditto mark had been put in his “born” column suggesting he was born in Ireland.

But that still leaves a lot of years between the census returns where there appear to be no more new children; the previously mentioned consecutive run of children who died in infancy explains this. The list is depressing:

BRIDGET 1866 Bridgeton 2 1868 Clyde

All of these children were born between the 1861 Census and the died before the 1871 Census.

The family have moved from their 1871 Census residence at 20 Margaret Place, Glasgow to 12 Thistle Street, Glasgow.  John is still a blacksmith but is now aged 50; Ann is 40 but the other names in the household take a bit of teasing out.

There had actually been another child born just after the 1871 Census and that was Ann whose birth was registered at RD Clyde and whose death, aged 1 was registered in the same place the following year. There would be at least one other child death in the family but this death marked the end of a five-child run of deaths in infancy.

Michael (born 1859) is not in the household would be about 21. I have not managed to locate him but I do know from later sources that he became a travelling salesman so this may account for his absence.

Ellen, the next child, seems to be recorded as Ellen Fericher and her husband, Patrick is also in the household. He is a 19-year-old blacksmith and Ellen is also 19. This had me completely flummoxed until I discovered that the enumerator had written down what he heard but was obviously unfamiliar with the spelling of Farquhar. Patrick Farquhar and Ellen Judge got married 5 Nov 1880 at St Francis’s Chapel on Cumberland Street.

There had been other children born between the 1871 Census and the 1881 Census. As we saw in the list of children at the start of this section, Margaret had been born on 27 Mar 1874 and she is recorded as aged 7 at this census. There had been a child, Richard, born 14 May 1876 but he died shortly after. Anne followed; she was born 31 Jan 1879 and at this census she is recorded as aged 2.

His wife, Ann, is now 60 but no occupation is given for her. Their daughter Ellen had died in 1897 aged 35; their daughter, Maggie, is still in the household, now an unmarried 25-year-old “bond warehouse forewoman” (ten years before she had been a 17-year-old “tobacco spinner”). The youngest daughter, Mary, is now an unmarried 18-year-old “shirt machinist”. The household is rounded off by John Farquhar, grandson, aged 17 and a “telephone linesman. John is the son of the above mentioned Ellen who died in 1897 She seems to have remarried to an Alexander Morris in 1892 (but I have not found the death of her first husband). John Farquhar is the only child I know from Ellen’s first marriage to Patrick Farquhar.

She records that she has had 12 children, four of which are alive. Michael (born 1859) would be one of them and from deduction the other children still alive must be the later children, Margaret (born 1874), Anne (born 1879) and Mary (born 1882). Mary is the third person in the household and is now 28-years-old and still single.

Here we find the Barret’s still living at 12 Goosedubs.  Patrick is aged 47 and his wife, Bridget, is aged 40. Their daughter, Ann, who we saw at the 1841 Census is no longer in the household; she married John Judge at St Andrew’s Chapel on 2 October 1855 and had her own household at this point. Michael is now the oldest of the children in the household and he is 18-years old and a “drain labourer” like his father. There are new children since the 1851 Census – Mary (9), Richard (7) and Bridget (5). All of them were born in Glasgow and all are scholars.

The children have grown up and Michael is now a 28-year-old labourer, still unmarried; Mary and Bridget both work as “reelers”; Mary is 18, Bridget is 14. Richard is aged 16 and is a “callenderer”

Michael was probably a witness at the marriage of his sister, Mary, to James McKinney on 31 Dec 1873. The other witness was Bridget who may have been another sister.

Ten years later, the family are living at 201 Rutherglen Road but there are some major changes. Michael’s father, Patrick,  is now 80-years-old (sic) and a “Roadsman”. His mother, Bridget, is 61-years-old. Michael is now 33-years-old (sic) and is a “labourer boatyard”. Obviously the ages are adrift for Patrick and Michael. Patrick should be around 70 and Michael about 38. Also in the household is Michael’s sister, Mary, who is said to be a 36-year-old charwoman and a widow. The remaining two people are Michael’s sister, Bridget, and her husband, Edward Conroy; here they are recorded as Kinroy.

Michael is now said to be 40-years-old and a “holder at ship yard” – so he has been in the shipyard for a number of years; he Richard, the next son, is still in textiles and he is a 34-year-old “calendar man”. The other people in the house are grand-children of Michael’s parents and so nephews and nieces to Michael.

Michael Barret at the 1901 Census

I have been unable to find Michael at the 1901 Census. He was the informant at the registration of the death of his father, Patrick, who died 19 Apr 1894 at 64 Rose Street, Glasgow. Likewise he was the informant at the death of his mother, Bridget, who died 19 Jun 1899 at 64 Rose Street, Glasgow. It is entirely possible that he was living there on both dates but I have not found him there in 1901. The next record I have of him is at the 1911 Census.

The Children of Mary Barrett and James McKinney – Overview

I know of three children born to Mary Barrett and James McKinney; Bridget who was born 21 Feb 1875, James who was born 1876 but died the following year and Mary who was born 7 Jun 1878. I discuss these children in greater detail – as with all the grand-children of Patrick Barrett and Bridget Haggerty in another sub-page of this site which you can find here if you are interested; for the moment I only mention them as they are born or appear in the census returns of their parents.

It is clear from the 1881 Census, when Mary is described as a widow, that James McKinney died some time between 1878 and 1881. I have so far failed to find a death registration for him and I still feel that there is more to this situation than meets the eye. Be that as it may, we next find the widowed Mary back at the parental home for the 1881 Census.

The Children of Mary Barrett And Francis Hanratty – Overview

I know of five or possibly six children born to Mary Barrett and Francis Hanratty ; Ann was born 23 May 1884, Francis James was born 9 Mar 1890, Owen or John, born 16 Nov 1891, Agnes born 15 May 1894 and John born 3 Sep 1895. I discuss these children in greater detail – as with all the grand-children of Patrick Barrett and Bridget Haggerty – in a sub-page that you can see here. It looks like, after their marriage in 1886, Mary and Francis moved from Glasgow to the Bellshill area of Lanarkshire – about 14 miles from Glasgow; I assume for employment reasons. All the children I know of, that they had, were born in Mossend, Bellshill, Lanarkshire and that is where we find them at the 1891 Census.

Their daughter, Ann, who we saw at the 1841 Census is no longer in the household; she married John Judge at St Andrew’s Chapel on 2 October 1855 and had her own household at this point. Michael is the oldest of the children in the household; 18-years old and a “drain labourer” like his father. There are new children since the 1851 Census – Mary (9), Richard (7) and Bridget (5). All of them were born in Glasgow and all are scholars.

The children have grown up; Michael is now a 28-year-old labourer, still unmarried; Mary and Bridget both work as “reelers”; Mary is 18, Bridget is 14. Richard is aged 16 and is a “callenderer”

At the 1881 Census, Richard’s family are living at 201 Rutherglen Road but there are some major changes. Richard’s father, Patrick,  is now 80-years-old (sic) and a “Roadsman”. His mother, Bridget, is 61-years-old. Michael, the eldest child in the household, is now 33-years-old (sic) and is a “labourer boatyard”. Obviously the ages are adrift for Patrick and Michael. Patrick should be around 70 and Michael about 38. Mary is back with her family after the death of James McKinney and she is said to be a 36-year-old charwoman and a widow. Of the three children she had with James McKinney, the surviving two, Bridget (6) and Mary (8) are also in the household described as granddaughters. Their surname (and their mother’s) is recorded as McKenna not McKinney. Richard is now 25-years-old, an unmarried “clothlapper”. The remaining two people are Mary’s sister, Bridget, and her husband, Edward Conroy; here they are recorded as Kinroy. Bridget is a 26-year-old cotton millworker and her husband, also 26-year-old, is a Hammerman. This rounds off the household. Obviously quite a lot has happened to the family between the 1871 and 1881 Censuses.

Both Richard’s parents are still alive; his father, Patrick, is now said to be 70-years-old (a correction to the obviously wrong age stated at the previous census) and Michel’s mother, Bridget is now aged 64. Michael is still unmarried at 48 and he is a “holder on shipyard”. Richard, is still unmarried and is a 34-year-old “calenderman” Also in the household are Bridget McKinney “granddaughter” aged 16 who is a “tobacco worker”; she is the daughter of Michael’s sister, Mary, who married James McKinney. Also in the household are Catherine Conroy, a 9-year-old scholar and Michel Conroy, aged 7. They are described as granddaughter and grandson and are the two children of Michel’s sister, Bridget.

Richard seems to have been the man to go to for godparenting or witnessing family events. In 1890 he stood as sponsor at the baptism of his sister, Mary’s, child, Francis Henretty; the other sponsor was Helen Judge who was probably a sibling of his sister, Ann’s, husband, John Judge.

He was the informant at the death registration of his father in 1894 and, later that year, was godparent to another of his sister, Mary’s, children; this time Agnes Henretty. This time the other sponsor was Mary McKinney – probably either his sister or her daughter, also Mary.

Richard eventually married on 2 November 1898.

Children of Richard Barrett and Flora Morrison – Overview

I discuss the children of these families in greater detail – as with all the grand-children of Patrick Barrett and Bridget Haggerty – in another sub-page of this site which you can find here if you are interested; for the moment I only mention them as they are born or appear in the census returns of their parents.

In summary, though, their known children (to me) were Richard Barrett b 18 Apr 1892, Elizabeth Barrett b 30 Sep 1894, Mary McKennay Barratt b 8 Jul 1898, Marion McMillan Barrett b 16 Dec 1900 and Margaret Howies Barratt b c. 1902 We see this reflected in the census returns. It is clear from the dates of births when compared to the marriage date, that probably the first two children were born out of wedlock and the third may have been conceived that way.

Here we see the family after the death of Flora, living at 138 South Wellington Street. Richard Barrett is now a 56-year-old widower and a “Clothlapper” at a wool warehouse. His eldest child, Richard, is eighteen and a “Linesman” at a telephone company. The eldest daughter, Elizabeth, is “at home” and is aged sixteen. The other two daughters, Mary (12) and Marion (10) are scholars. Their youngest daughter, Margaret, had died in 1903 – a year after her birth.

Richard was the informant at the registration of the death of his brother, Michael, in 1913; Michael had died in Govan Poorhouse. He gives his address as 227 South Wellington Street. The family had probably moved to 237 South Wellington Street by 1919 since that was the address given by his daughter, Mary, when she married Edward McGuire. In fact, this is where we find them at the next census.

Here we see Richard as a nearly sixty-seven-year-old Cloth Lapper working for James Park. His daughter, Elizabeth is no longer in the household; she had married James McCue in 1913. His daughter, Mary, is 22-years-old and is employed in home duties. As we saw above, she married Edward McGuire 19 Aug 1919 and this is surely the Edward McGurie, “unemployed carter” listed as a lodger here. Also, surely, the child, Edward McGurie, is her son even though both are listed simply as lodgers. We might have expected the elder Edward to be listed as son-in-law. Having said that Edward junior is probably Mary’s son, I have not found a statutory birth for him nor a baptismal entry. The household also had Marion who is now aged twenty and she is, like Mary, occupied with “home duties”; three years after this census was taken she would marry Charles Neil in St John’s Chapel in Portugal Street.

Summary of the Children of Patrick Barrett and Bridget Haggerty

This is all I know at present about the children on Patrick Barrett and Bridget Haggerty. The above was really meant as a bit of background to the Barrett family, Patrick and Bridget’s son, Richard, had one son and four daughters (see above) and one of those daughters, Marion McMillan Barrett, married my grandfather, Timothy Chrystal Neil’s brother, Charles Neil. It is perhaps a bit too much of a deep dive for casual readers of this site but there is a bit more. In the course of this research I dipped in to what happened to the children of the children of Patrick Barrett and Bridget Haggerty. Some bits information came more readily that other other bits so some of these grandchildren are detailed a little bit and some, not at all. I made a sub-page of this site just out of complete-ism and you can find out about these grandchildren here if you are interested.
