WordPress Migration to Hostinger

Various of my WordPress web sites were loading extremely slowly on my 1&1 Ionos hosting and I was keen to try out an alternative hosting company to see if I could get better load speeds. I looked at a few of the options and settled on Hostinger.

I looked at various YouTube videos about Hostinger and the best I found were by Rino de Boer at How you can use Hostinger for Website management and Ferdy Korpershoek at Complete Hostinger Tutorial 2024. Having looked at these I felt that Hostinger was worth a shot even if I only tried it for the 12 month period. It was cheap enough to persuade me to set up an account and get a new domain name. Hopefully I could get my blogs to load faster on Hostinger. The above two tutorials were useful in setting up the account and then setting up the free email account that went with the main domain name mail@billneil.org

Account

I set up an account but ended up with a domain name that I had not chosen which I think was a browser error. I had to cancel this account and start again. I opted for the Premium package to test out Hostinger. See below for details of the package.

I chose the domain name billneil.org

Setting Up File Space and Copying My Web Site

I used the file manager to create a folder within the “public_html folder” and another for my blogs “blogs”. I set up Filezilla for file transfer. There is a good tutorial here How to create an FTP account in Hostinger and upload with Filezilla?.

I then copied all my HTML/CSS family history site to there and it all seemed to work well with the url of https://www.billneil.org/family

Copying My WordPress Blogs

This turned out to be pretty easy. In the Hostinger control panel I clicked on Web Sites/ Auto-Installer/ WordPress and installed a black instance of wordpress into a sub-domain I had created. When this was installed I deleted any posts and pages, disabled any plugins and installed WPvivid plugin. I had been using this on my 1&1 Ionos hosted blog and it was working well. Cloning my budding WordPress family site using this plugin turned out to be very easy. The above mentioned tutorials cove this but How To Migrate WordPress Site To Another Domain With Wpvivid – Transfer WordPress is shorter and more to the point – if you skip the first 5 minutes.

In the end I had two sub-domains for my blogs https://familycopy2025-12-04.billneil.organd https://birding.billneil.org . Both are works in progress with the former using the Kadence theme and the later (for the moment) using WordPress 2024 theme.

I did all this over a couple of afternoons (having watched several hours of viseos before) and it was pretty painless. The Hostinger interface seems friendlier and easier to use. I could even migrate completely but I will work on it for a while and see.
