Some Research into the Burt Family
A hint from Ancestry set me down a rabbit hole concerning the Burt family. My William Ramsay married Margaret burt in 1810 and this concerns her siblings and parents
I don’t know if I really want to add any of this as I found some of it hard to verify. Other bits seemed good but more detailed research is needed to sort of the good from the bad. I added the information to notes for each of the people in my “Family Historian” software concerned but didn’t add them as facts
PETER BURT and JANET DUNCAN
There is more information about John Burt, the son of Peter Burt & Euphan Couper and brother of Margaret Burt who married William Ramsay. https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/63191548/person/422336296433/facts
According to this Ancestry link he married Janet Duncan (1813-1887) on 1 Jun 1834 at Kinross.
Their children were
William Henry Burt (1836-1917) born Dunfermline
Jane Burt (Owen) (1837–1871) born Dunfermline
John Burt (1839–1861) born Scotland
Jane Hamlyn Dorothea Willian Abrams Burt (1841–1861) born On Board Ship to Australia
He died 1883 Hoih W, Victoria, Australia
It has to be said that I could not find the births of these children (at least the Scottish born ones). I did find the marriage at https://www.findmypast.co.uk/transcript?id=SCOT%2FOPR%2FMAR%2F0828164%2F1&tab=this
At Scotland’s People it is at
https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/record-results/88470894266a36cbc318af
I put all this inside a note for him in Family Historian

ISABELLA ORMISTON BURT
There was another hint on ancestry regarding this family
This links to a Geneanet Tree at https://gw.geneanet.org/dgerrard?n=burt&oc=&p=isabella
that suggests that she married Andrew Stenhouse (1816-1857) 30 Oct 1843 at Dunfermline. A search of Find My Past shows the banns date of 30 Oct 1843 and marriage as 1843. Andrew Stenhouse is in the transcription as a labourer of Inverkeithing.
According to the Geneanet listing they had two children
Andrew Stenhouse 1845-
Euphemia Cooper Stenhouse 1847-1937
There is a tree of this at https://gw.geneanet.org/dgerrard?lang=en&pz=alice&nz=gunning&ocz=1&m=A&p=andrew&n=stenhouse&oc=7&siblings=on¬es=on&t=T&v=6&image=on&marriage=on&full=on-1937
Which shows more of Andrew Stenhouse’s parentage.
There is also a link on the Find My Past website to the 1851 Census https://www.findmypast.co.uk/transcript?id=GBC%2F1851%2F0020753494&tab=this
| First name(s) | Last name | Relationship | Marital status | Sex | Age | Birth year | Occupation | Birth place |
| Andrew | Stanhouse | Head | Married | Male | 36 | 1815 | Gardener | Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland |
| Isabella | Stanhouse | Wife | Married | Female | 35 | 1816 | – | Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland |
| Andrew | Stanhouse | Son | – | Male | 5 | 1846 | Scholar | Inverkeithing, Fife, Scotland |
| Euphemia | Stanhouse | Daughter | – | Female | 3 | 1848 | – | Inverkeithing, Fife, Scotland |
There is also a suggestion here https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/176461572/person/182293414209/hints that she may have remarried to a Fredric Jones and that she died 24 Jun 1873 at Creswick, Victoria, Australia. An “estate notice” is attached at https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/176461572/person/182293414209/hints
which says that she died intestate and that it was decided that her estate should be granted to “Euphemia Watson, wife of James Watson, of Creswick aforesaid, labourer and the daughter and next of kin of the said deceased”
So it seems from this that Euphemia born 1848 in Inverkeithing married a James Watson. This also rather implies that Euphemia’s older brother, Andrew, had died before his mother’s death in 1873
In fact you can go on forever with this family. There are lots of links to other children of Peter Burt & Euphan Couper including
Elizabeth Burt b 1826 Dunfermline
married
Children

She possibly also died 23 Feb 1897 Dunfermline
James Burt
There is a suggestion on Ancestry that he died the same year as his birth
See https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/34423806/person/402354465251/facts
but if you follow this there are some ridiculous contradictions

Mary Burt
There is a suggestion that she also married a Stenhouse – Robert Senhouse (1819-1903) in Inverkeithing on 21 Jun 1841. This suggests that they had the following children
- Euphemia Couper Stenhouse 1842–
- Andrew Stenhouse 1845–
- Peter Burt Stenhouse 1848–
- Sophia Moodie Stenhouse 1850–
- Robert Stenhouse 1853–
- Jessie Stenhouse 1856–1944
- Mary Stenhouse 1859–
- James Stenhouse 1862–
From <https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/34423806/person/402354465253/facts>
It also suggests she died 28 Aug 1878 at Tillicoultry, Fife, Scotland
